Origin/meaning

The arms are canting, the old name of the city is Lewenstein (lion-stone). Although the city received city rights in 1374, no seals are known until the 17th century. This seal showed already the above composition. The colours originally seem to have been a silver double-tailed lion (Bohemia ?), later a black lion, taken from the arms of Meissen, as the city was part of the Mark Meissen. When the above colours were adopted is not known.

Hupp showed the arms in the 1920s in a slightly different composition :

Seal of Lauenstein (Altenberg)

Seal from around 1900
Wappen von Lauenstein (Altenberg)

The arms by Hupp in the Kaffee Hag albums +/- 1925
