Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The green embattled bar is a canting element for Green(s)-burg, the native diocese of the bishop. The green peach tree is also canting, as the family name Persico is derived from the latin for peach.

The grill is the symbol of St. Lawrence, the bishop's patron saint, who suffered martyrdom by being roasted alive by his persecutors. These three symbols also reflect the bishops under whom Bishop Persico has served by repeating a symbol from their coats of arms: from Bishop William Graham Connare, the bar; from Bishop Anthony Gerard Bosco, the tree; from Bishop Lawrence Eugene Brandt, the grill.

Below the shield is the bishop's motto, "Veritas In Caritate," "Truth in Love," from Ephesians 4:15: "Rather, living the truth in love we are to grow up, in every way, into Him who is the head, Christ."

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969, confirmed in March 2001.
