Dutch	(1823) Van zilver beladen met een dubbelden arend van sabel met uitgespreiden vlerken en pooten, boven den arend een schildje van goud waarop een klimmenden leeuw van sabel. (1838) Wit veld met eenen arend met twee hoofden van zwart koleur, waerby, aen de bovenzyde, een gouden wapenschild belaeden met eenen zwarten leeuw.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on October 2, 1823 and again on July 21, 1838.

The arms are known since the 16th century. The arms are first seen on a map of Gaillard from 1557.

The arms are a combination of elements of the old seals of the city. The oldest seal is known from 1309 and shows the Imperial eagle with two keys. The contra-seal from the same time shows a lion (of Flanders ?).
