Origin/meaning

Loitz was founded in 1242 by Detlev von Gadebusch. The oldest seal dates from the second half of the 13th century and shows a wing and a stick, each above a star. The composition is not placed in a shield. A later, 16th century, seal shows already the complete arms.

Two later seals, from the 17th and 18th century show a very complicated image, in which the parts of the arms (sticks, stars and wings) appear, but which are very unlike the older images.

The meaning or origin of the elements is not certain. It is assumed that the wings are taken from the arms of the Von Gadebusch family, who used an eagle in their arms. On the other hand, the two wings have also been explained as the eagle of Gadebusch and the eagle of Brandenburg. The meaning of the sticks and stars is completely unknown.
