Origin/meaning

The arms of Mödling were granted on January 24, 1458 by Emperor Frederick III.

The arms combine the arms of Austria and Styria. In 1156, the margrave of Austria was made a duke and Austria consequently became a duchy. Between 1174 and 1233, however, within the ducal family a secondary branch existed. This branch resided at Moedling and styled themselves "Duke of Moedling". Hence the use of the arms of Austria.

In 1180, the Styrian Duke Otakar IV died without issue and the duke of Austria inherited the Styrian lands and the dukes possessions. The two duchies became, in time, the nucleus for the Austrian Empire.
