The school was founded in 1513 by Dame Agnes Mellers, Sir Thomas Lovell and King Henry VIII. The arms incorporate those of the founders: the arms of the Mellers family were three blackbirds (or merles) on a white field. The crowns are taken from the arms of the city of [[Nottingham]] (and also refer to Henry VIII) and the open book is a symbol of learning. The crest is taken from the arms of Thomas Lovell.

The motto is Latin for "Praise to the end".
