Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on February 11, 1954.

The arms are based on the old seal of the town. The upper part shows the local castle, built in 1590. The lower part shows a salmon; salmon fishing is important in the local river.

The oldest seal dates from 1650 and already shows on the one side a fish, on the other the fish and castle.

In the 18th century the arms were probably designed. The size, shape and colour of the elments in the arms has differed widely during the centuries.

In the 19th century B. Kene proposed small changes to the arms, by adding the provincial arms in the upper right corner and placing the arms in front of two anchors. This proposal was never adopted.
