The arms were adopted in 1925 and are partly derived from the arms of William Pitt, founder of the city of Pittsburgh and Lord Chatham. The chequered bar and the besants are derived from the old family arms, see also [[Chatham]] in England. The colours are different however, as are the birds on the besants.
