Origin/meaning

The arms were adopted in 1979.

The colours are the American colours and also reflect that Rockville was a four-time winner of the All-America City Award. The blue and whity wavy bends also indicate Rock Creek, for which Rockville is named.

The red crosses are taken from the arms of the Crossland family. Alicia Crossland was the mother of Sir George Calvert, first Lord Baltimore and founder of the colony of Maryland. The cross also appears in the Maryland arms.

The mural crown indicates a city. The crest shows a Rock Hawk, native to the area and used as a canting element. The hawk holds a small shield with the Calvert family arms.

The supporters are bobcats, native to the area and symbolic for the fierceness of America. They hold two feather quills, representing the Hungerford Resolves, signed by the citizens in 1774 in support of Boston's resistance against England. The broken chains of the bobcats indicate the freedom from Great Britain.
