Origin/meaning

The top centre in the 'arms' show a picture of our Lady of Czestochowa in Poland, where the Bishop grew up and was ordained as a priest. The picture of Mary also refers to the Centocow Mission in the Diocese of Umzimkulu where the bishop has worked since 1991.

The other parts of the upper half indicate the mostly rural communities of the Diocese and the Christian Community in all its diversity, worshipping together the Saviour Jesus Christ who died on the cross for all peoples to unite them in one Church.

The lower half is based on the Coat of Arms of the Order of St Paul the First Hermit, which the bishop joined in 1979. Ilt symbolises the spiritual roots of the Order.

The Motto: "In Servilio Populi Dei" - "In Service to the People of God" - "Ukusebenzela Abantu bakaNkulunkulu" - W sluzbie Ludowi Bozemu" - expresses the programme of pastoral work in the diocese.
