Origin/meaning

Tübingen was founded in the late 12^th century by the Counts-Palatine of Tübingen. The family used the banner (gonfanon) in its arms and the city adopted the banner as its arms already in the early 13^th century. Even after the city was acquired by Württemberg in 1342 the arms did not change.

The two arms holding the deer antler of the arms of Württemberg were granted in 1514 by Duke Ulrich.
