THOMAS JOSEPH WALSH

Born : December 6, 1873
Deceased : June 6, 1952

Bishop of Trenton, 1918-1928
Bishop of Newark, 1928-1937
Archbishop of Newark, 1937-1952

Arms of Thomas Joseph Walsh

Bishop of Trenton
Arms of Thomas Joseph Walsh

Archbishop of Newark

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

Bishop Walsh had quite different arms in Trenton as in Newark

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the (arch)bishop.

I have no information on the personal arms in Trenton.

In Newark he chose a design based on the arms of one of the many Walsh families from England (to represent the name of the bishop), with the addition of three spear-heads, the attribute of St. Thomas, his patron saint.
