Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on January 15, 1996.

The green field honours the surname of the founder and benefactor of Green College, Dr. Cecil Green. The fir tree-line is a reference to the beauty of the College’s forested setting and the wavy bars refer to its seaside location. The yellow is a reference to excellence and the light of knowledge. The open books symbolize the interchange of ideas and the bringing together of teachers, researchers, students and other experts into a multidisciplinary search for knowledge and understanding. This approach is represented by the interlocking disc.

The circlet of alternating yellow roses and white dogwood flowers links Dr. Green’s Texas residence and his work in British Columbia. The cougars, an animal native to the province, symbolize the men and women of the College community and continue the notion of a multidisciplinary approach to study and research. The international outreach activity involved in this approach is represented by the globe.

The motto was suggested by Dr. Richard Ericson to recognize the philosophy behind the College and the experience of its residents.
