Origin/meaning

The arms show in the upper part the points of the arms of Franken. The lower part shows the banner of the State of Würzburg and the wheel of the State of Mainz. Until 1803 the largest part of the area belonged to either one of these States.

The arms were also used by the former Kreis Unterfranken, but with the royal crown:
