Origin/meaning
The arms were officially adopted on November 2, 2018.
Verkhoyansk is one of the coldest places on Earth, the coldest city in the world, as indicated by images of snowflakes and northern lights. The image of snow-capped mountains in the sign of the Verkhoyansk ranges. The white horse represents the Yang breed of horses, hardy, adapted to cracking frosts, unpretentious, fetching its own food from under the snow.
The wavy bar is the Yana River near the town.
The first proposal for arms ofthe town was made in 1858 and showed a silver deer head on a blue field. This was never approved.
A later design from the 19th century showed the arms of the Yakutsk region in the upper half and two fish in the lower half, fishing being a main activity in the town. These arms were send for approval in 1900. I have no information whether they were actually used.
In the 1989 a new symbol was used, showing the northern lights, the river, a snowflake and the name of the town. These have been used non officially until 2018. They were used in different colours.
Between 1989 and 2018 different proposals were made and also approved by the local counsil, but only in 2018 the current arms were officially approved by the National Council of Deputies and registered in the heraldic register.
