VIŠTYTIS

County : Marijampolė
Municipality : Vilkaviškis

Arms (crest) of Vištytis
Official blazon
Lithuanian blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on September 8, 1570 and re-granted on May 3, 1999.

The arms reflect the Blessed Virgin Mary (a unicorn is one of symbols of Virgin Mary).

Though formally abolished in 1776, the self-administration of the town continued the use of the unicorn on seals (the evidence is known from 1785, 1789, 1790) and restored the arms formally in 1791 using the according decree of the Four Year Parliament. After the collapse of the state in 1795 the arms also survived until early 19th century, as the seal is known from the period of 1795-1807, when Vištytis depended to Prussia.
