WIVENHOE (UDC and Town council)
Incorporated into : 1974 Colchester
Official blazon
Origin/meaning
Wivenhoe UDC never used arms.
The arms displayed here are of the Town Council. The arms were designed in 1963.
The design was based on the seal used by Wivenhoe since 1898 with the specific addition of a raven in the crest. The design was made for the production of the Chairman's Jewel in 1963.
The boat is a sailing smack, reflecting Wivenhoe’s connection with the River Colne, and the oyster shell because oysters had been cultivated in tidal estuaries around Colchester even before the Roman invasion. The origin of the quartered shield is not known.
The raven is taken from a badge of Colchester according to the Wivenhoe webpage, but Colchester never used a raven in its arms or seals.
After 1974 the arms were adopted by the Town Council, but were never granted. The town council uses the arms with a banner 'Wivenhoe Town Council'.
