Freiland is a municipality in Western Styria, on the mountain ridge of the Koralpe. It was settled only at the end of the 12th century, which is comparatively late for this region. It was unclaimed, "free land" (Frei Land), in other words raw woods, from which the first settlers had to hew their homesteads. So, a plain shield was used for Freiland. As clover is an important plant for fodder, a bordure of trefoils was included, too. Red and silver are the colours of the Benedictine monastery of Admont, which owned the lands of the now municipality.
