The settlement was founded in 1516 by Count Stephen Slik in the vicinity of silver ore mines. Four years later King Louis I promoted the settlement to the status of a free mining town and at the same time granted it a coat-of-arms which was changed in 1546 at the occasion of the elevation of Jáchymov to the status of a royal mining town by King Ferdinand I. This is reflected by the crowned Bohemian lion placed in two sections of the quartered shield. A structure with a conically shaped roof and housing a winch above the mouth of the pit refers to mining. In the center of the shield there are crossed mining hammers placed on the Austrian coat-of-arms. | The settlement was founded in 1516 by Count Stephen Slik in the vicinity of silver ore mines.
