The arms show the Imperial eagle and the lion of Bohemia and were granted by Emperor Sigismund. Görlitz belonged to Bohemia until 1635, when the city became part of Sachsen.

On October 2, 1536, Görlitz received new arms from Emperor Charles V. These arms quartered the eagle and lion, and with an inescutcheon of Austria and the imperial crown.
