The city was situated at the border of the Imperial forest of Dreieich, and already in the 13th century the village received several rights, but complete city rights were granted in 1718 by Count Wolfgang Ernst zu Isenburg. The oldest seal, known since 1635, already shows the canting oak (Eich) with three (drei) acorns. All later seals show the same image, but the oak was not placed on a shield.
