===Origin/meaning===
The arms of Ferrol refer to its historically martial character. In 1749 Ferrol was chosen as the main shipyard for the Spanish navy by virtue of its superb, easily defended natural harbour; even today it has a thriving shipyard building modern frigates and is the headquarters for the Spanish navy's Atlantic command. The shield shows the city's docks defended by a tower representing the impressive fortifications guarding the harbour, flanked by cannon representing the city's arms industry.
