The personal arms show the Sacred Heart in chief recalling the Sacred Heart Parish at Mildura where he received his earliest formal education. The heart is taken from the arms of [[James Robert Knox|Archbishop Knox]] who encouraged and supported the bishop of his priestly vocation. It also refers to the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart who taught him at St Paul’s National Seminary at Kensington and the Parish of the Sacred Heart at Carlton which was his first appointment as Parish Priest.
