As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The personal field is divided by the Cross of Saint George to honor the baptismal patron of the bishop and his father. The fleur-de-lis honors the Blessed Virgin Mary as well as the bishop's mother.

The pale is taken from the arms of a Cunningham family and symbolises his grandmother, who was named Cunningham. The pallium is also part of the arms of the [[Archdiocese of Dublin]] and thus also refers to his Irish ancestry.

The motto is taken from the first letter of St. John.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
