The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city. The seal dates from around 1380 and shows the local church of St. Michael on a hill, and the quartered shield of the Vicounts of Nürnberg from the Hohenzollern dynasty in the left half. Later seals added the waves in the hill below the church. This symbolises the Lamnitz river. Again later the two halves were exchanged, the quartered shield in the right and the church in the left half. The colours are known since 1582. The present arms, which were granted in 1931 are thus identical to the last seals and the colours from 1581.
