The arms show the goat-headed eagle of the Counts of [[Ziegenhain]], as the city (founded around 1250) was in the main territory of these counts until 1450. The arms are already present below a city gate on a seal from 1261. In the 14th century the gate was removed and the arms have practically not been changed since. The stars may be a symbol of a local monastery, devoted to St. Mary, and which owned the territory prior to 1246. The position of the stars as well as the colour of the tongue and claws of the animal have changed several times during the centuries and are now according to the oldest seal. < | The arms show the goat-headed eagle of the Counts of [[Ziegenhain]], as the city (founded around 1250) was in the main territory of these counts until 1450.
