Andrew Joseph McDonald
ANDREW JOSEPH MCDONALD
Born : October 24, 1923
Deceased : April 1, 2014
Bishop of Little Rock, 1972-2000
Official blazon
Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The chief shows the Holy Spirit (dove) in the Marian colours (blue and silver) and two crescents. The crescent is also a symbol for St. Mary and symbolises here the St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore where the bishop studied.
The lion is taken from the McDonald clan in Scotland as a 'canting' symbol (but these are not the family arms of the bishop). The hand with the saltire symbolises St. Andrew, the patron saint of the bishop.
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
