Arms of Ribe

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1938.

The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city, known since 1295. The arms are a combination of the lions of Denmark and the local cathedral. Ribe was one of the most important cities in the 13th century and of great importance to the Danish Kings. The city thus had the right to use the Danish lions. The local bishop was also very powerful, thus the importance of the local cathedral.
