====Origin/meaning====The ship represents the arrival by sea from Nelson of the two surveyors Mr T J Thompson and Mr J W Barnicoat. The anchor, the firm establishment of the town. The oak and elm leaves are a reminder of many such trees in the borough planted by the original settlers between 1842 and 1848. The wavy bar with a yellow line within is indicative of the town's proximity to the sea and its favourable climate. The lamb in scale the areas pastoral wealth and the swan from the armorial bearings of Richmond-on-Thames, Surrey, England from whence the name derives.
