Born : November 14, 1876
Deceased : September 8, 1955

Bishop of Portland, 1932-1955

Impaled. Dexter : Azure, semé of pine cones, a cross moline argent; Sinister : Argent, a stag trippant gules attired and unguled or, on a chief of the second, a martlet between two lilies of the first.

Motto: Mihi vivere Christus est.

Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The personal arms are based on the coat of arms of the McCarthy family, Earls of Clancarty: Argent, a stag trippant gules attired and unguled or. The martlet is from the coat of arms of St. Edward, King and Confessor and the lilies symbolize St. Joseph, the Bishop's two name Patrons.
