JAMES JOSEPH DALY

Born : August 14, 1921
Deceased : October 14, 2013

Auxiliary Bishop of Rockville Centre, 1977-1996

Arms (crest) of James Joseph Daly

Official blazon

Per fess argent and or, a lion rampant per fess sable and gules, an escallop between the fore paws, dexter chief is the sacred heart, in the sinister chief is the griffin's head erased of the fourth, and in the middle chief point a lily slipped proper.

Origin/meaning

The lion and the colours are based on the arms of some Irish Daly family and are taken here to symbolise the last name of the bishop. The scallop is the symbol of St. James and thus symbolise the first name of the bishop.

The sacred heart and the lily are important symbols for the bishop. The griffin's head symbolises the mother of the bishop, whose last name was Cass. The head is taken from the arms of some Cass family arms.
