The arms were officially granted on April 23, 1996.

The arms reflects the establishment and name of the town. In 1737 the first homestead is mentioned in local woods: a family of tar-maker and charcoal-burner Kazla, hence a Lithuanian surname (modern form Kazlas), originating from Polish "koziol" (meaning "goat"). His 6 sons increased the new business: they started exploiting the local swamp ore and became good smiths. Therefore the settlement got name Kazlu Ruda (literally "Kazlas' Ore", meaning "Kazlas' Foundry").

The back field refers to tar and charcoal, the 6 stars refer to sparks flying from iron forged by the 6 brothers, and the antlers of roebuck symbolize both the location of the town in woods and the surname Kazlas: in many Lithuanian dialects a roe is called "wood goat".
