The arms show St. Mary, patron saint of the city, and of the Sainte-Marie-d'Aix-la-Chapelle abbey, which received the village as a loan in 877 and owned it until 1332, when it became a possession of the counts of Luxembourg. As no historical seals or arms were known, the council decided in 1818 for the patron saint.
