Oberwesel was in medieval times an important city, and became an Imperial city in 1235. <br>

The oldest seal dates from the same time and shows a fortified tower and city wall. The second seal dates from 1268 and shows a similar composition, but now with a King in a gate in the city wall. From 1300 onwards all seals show the Imperial eagle, even though the city became part of the [[Trier (State)|State of Trier]] in 1312.
