The quartered shield shows the colours of Sachsen (green-silver) and Thüringen (red-silver) as until 1928 large parts of the present municipality belonged to Thüringen, ehereas the municipality now is part of Sachsen. Red and silver were also the colours of the County Schönburg, to which part of the municipality hostorically belonged. The blue wavy bar symbolises the Wiera river. The chief shows six wheat-ears, one for every village in the municipality and it also symbolises the agrocultural character of the municipality.
