Wallerfangen is the oldest city in Saarland, it got city righths in the late 13<sup>th</sup> century from Duke Friedrich III of Lorraine. It lost its importance in the 17<sup>th</sup> century after the building of the fortress in Saarlouis. The arms are based on the oldest known seal, dating from 1614. The across is the cross of Lorraine (see also [[Merzig]]), the symbol is the middle is supposed to be a (water)mill-iron (Mühleisen), the origin of the star is not known. It has been stated that it is the symbol of the local court.
