Hofgeismar was first mentioned as a city around 1220/30, and the oldest seal of the city is known from 1234. It shows a church tower behind a city wall. A second seal from 1266 shows a tower, with in the portal the Archbishop of Mainz, and two small wheels, the symbol of the [[Mainz (State)|State of Mainz]]. The secret seal from 1300 shows some architecture around a single wheel. This was further stylised in the next seal, dating from 1418.
