Friedrichstal was founded in 1699 for Walloon refugees and named Friedrichstal in 1700 after its founder Markgrave Friedrich of Baden-Durlach. The village had no own seal until 1811. The new seal showed the letter F surrounded by laurel branches. In 1895 the State Archives proposed arms with the letter F and a crown, in the colours of Baden. The proposal mentioned a crown lined with ermine, but the municipality adopted a normal crown in the arms as could be seen on the seal from 1901. These arms were used until 1967 when the above arms were officially granted.
