Origin/meaning

The shield is red for Artillery – the blue fess indicates the Federal service in 1898. The charge in the chief of the shield is a modified form of the shoulder sleeve insignia of the 31st Division, the two-colored parting indicating the service in the 31st Division on two sides of the world. The fleur-de-lis indicates the service in France.

The coat of arms was originally approved for the 116th Field Artillery Regiment on 14 April 1925. It was amended to correct the blazon of the shield on 20 April 1925. It was redesignated for the 116th Field Artillery Battalion on 9 October 1942. It was redesignated for the 116th Artillery Regiment on 7 July 1960. The insignia was redesignated for the 116th Field Artillery Regiment on 31 July 1972. The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 116th Field Artillery Regiment on 14 April 1925.
