Distinctive Unit Insignia. Description: A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Azure, an eagle's wing displayed with armored sword hand Argent grasping a short sword Or point to dexter base severing a bendlet of chains debased of the second, and charged on the pinion with three torteaux, two and one. Attached below the shield is a Silver scroll inscribed "WINGED ATTACK" in Blue letters.
Origin/meaning
Shield: The principal colors of the shield are those of Infantry. The eagle's wing is symbolic of the method of vertical attack and striking power of the airborne forces. The golden sword of freedom severing the chain is symbolic of the organization's participation in the liberation of 2000 prisoners of war at the Los Banos prison camp in Luzon, Philippine Islands. The three red roundels (torteaux) on the wing represent the organization's three campaigns: New Guinea, Luzon and Leyte. Crest: The golden sun, adapted from the Philippine Presidential Seal, represents the award of the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. The blue arrowhead bearing a scallop shell denotes the Distinguished Unit Citation awarded the unit for participation in the amphibious assault landing on Nasugbu Beach, Luzon. This unit's claim to the first landing in Japan (at Atsugi Airfield) is symbolized by the red mountain in base.
The arms were originally approved for the 188th Airborne Infantry Regiment on 28 September 1951. It was redesignated for the 188th Infantry Regiment on 11 September 1963. It was amended to add a crest to the coat of arms on 27 May 1965. The Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the 188th Airborne Infantry Regiment on 28 September 1951.
