(Distinctive Unit Insignia)

Official blazon

Shoulder Sleeve Insignia: On a scarlet vertical rectangle arched at top and bottom with a 1/8 inch scarlet border, 2 inches in width and 3 inches in height overall, a yellow mountain section of three peaks in base and a yellow triangle with point in center base throughout counterchanged; at center above the mountains a scarlet broad arrow point up between stylized aircraft wings and tail section in black.

Distinctive Unit Insignia: A gold color metal and enamel insignia 1 1/8 inches in height overall consisting of a gold broad arrow on a red field the arrow charged on the shaft with a blue star and flanked on either side by three gold stars within three cloud forms joined at the sides by a blue scroll looped around the arrow shaft and inscribed with the motto "READY IN DEFENSE" in gold letters.

Origin/meaning

Shoulder Sleeve Insignia: Scarlet and yellow are the colors associated with the Air Defense Artillery branch. The ascending arrowhead, apparently meeting and destroying an aircraft in flight, illustrates the basic mission of the Branch. The three peaks in base and V-shape (for five) allude to the unit’s numerical designation.

Distinctive Unit Insignia: Scarlet and yellow (gold) are the colors used by the Air Defense Artillery branch. The broad arrow represents the artillery round in whatever form it may take, shell or missile. The stars recognize the European Campaigns of World War II in which the unit was engaged, the one being placed upon the arrow to denote an assault landing in the Southern France Campaign. The stylized cloud formation alludes to the Brigade’s Air Defense mission.

The Shoulder Sleeve Insignia was approved on 13 February 1985. The Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the noncolor bearing units of the 35th Artillery Brigade, on 28 July 1966; authorized for the noncolor bearing units of the 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade on 4 April 1972.
