History: Constituted as 428 Fighter Squadron on 26 May 1943. Activated on 1 August 1943. Inactivated on 5 December 1945. Redesignated 428 Fighter-Bomber Squadron on 25 June 1952. Activated on 10 July 1952. Redesignated 428 Tactical Fighter Squadron on 1 July 1958. Inactivated on 30 June 1989. Redesignated 428 Tactical Fighter Training Squadron on 20 March 1990. Activated on 2 April 1990. Redesignated 428 Fighter Squadron on 1 November 1991. Inactivated on 12 October 1995. Activated on 15 September 1998. Inactivated on 5 July 2005. Activated on 18 May 2009. Flew mainly ground support, armed reconnaissance, and some counter air, sorties against the Luftwaffe, 25 April 1944-8 May 1945. Flew interdiction, close support, and escort sorties against the enemy in Korea, 1 August 1952-27 July 1953. Flew mainly close support, and some escort and counter air, sorties against the enemy in Southeast Asia, November 1964-March 1965. Detachment 1 flew mostly night combat sorties against North Vietnam, 25 March-c. 21 November 1968. Squadron flew mainly interdiction and close support sorties over North Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, 11 January-15 August 1973. Bombed Koh Tang Island in support of U.S. Marines during the Mayaguez Operation, 13-15 May 1975. Operational F-4, 1977-1980, and F-16, squadron, 1980-1989. Provided F-111 flight training, 1990-1995. Conducted continuation training of Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) personnel in rapid deployment and tactical employment of F-16 aircraft, 1998-2005.
