64TH FIGHTER WING, USAAF

History: Constituted as 3rd Air Defense Wing on 12 December 1942 and activated the same day. Moved to Algeria in February 1943. Redesignated 64th Fighter Wing in July 1943. served with the Twelfth Air Force in the Mediterranean teather until November 1944. Moved to the European teather and continued operations until the war ended. Remained in Germany after the war as part of United States Air Forces Europe. inactivated on 5 June 1947. Redesignated 64th Air Division (Defense). Ativated in Newfoundland on 8 April 1952. Assigned to Northeast Air Command.
