700TH AIRLIFT SQUADRON, US AIR FORCE

History: Constituted as 700 Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) on 20 March 1943. Activated on 1 April 1943. Redesignated as 700 Bombardment Squadron, Heavy on 20 August 1943. Inactivated on 12 September 1945. Redesignated as 700 Bombardment Squadron, Very Heavy on 13 May 1947. Activated in the Reserve on 12 July 1947. Inactivated on 27 June 1949. Redesignated as 700 Fighter-Bomber Squadron on 24 June 1952. Activated in the Reserve on 8 July 1952. Redesignated as: 700 Troop Carrier Squadron, Medium on 6 September 1957; 700 Troop Carrier Squadron, Assault on 25 September 1958. Ordered to active service on 28 October 1962. Relieved from active duty on 28 November 1962. Redesignated as: 700 Troop Carrier Squadron, Heavy on 8 July 1965; 700 Air Transport Squadron, Heavy on 1 December 1965; 700 Military Airlift Squadron on 1 January 1966. Ordered to active service on 26 January 1968. Relieved from active duty on 2 June 1969. Redesignated as: 700 Tactical Airlift Squadron on 1 April 1972; 700 Airlift Squadron on 1 February 1992. Combat in European Theater of Operations (ETO), 13 December1943-25 April 1945. Trained for bombardment missions, 1947-1949, and for fighter-bomber missions, 1952-1957. Since 1957, provided tactical airlift to include airdrop, airland, and air evacuation of personnel and equipment. Trained C-130 aircrews for the USAF to provide air transportation for deployments, humanitarian airlift missions and aeromedical evacuations, 2000-.
