731ST AIRLIFT SQUADRON, US AIR FORCE

History: Constituted as 331 Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) on 28 January 1942. Activated on 15 June 1942. Redesignated as 331 Bombardment Squadron, Heavy on 20 August 1943. Inactivated on 29 November 1945. Redesignated as 331 Bombardment Squadron, Very Heavy on 13 May 1947. Activated in the Reserve on 29 May 1947. Redesignated as 331 Bombardment Squadron, Light on 26 June 1949. Ordered to active service on 10 March 1951. Inactivated on 20 March 1951. Redesignated as 331 Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron on 26 May 1952. Activated in the Reserve on 14 June 1952. Redesignated as 331 Bombardment Squadron, Tactical on 18 May 1955; 731 Troop Carrier Squadron, Medium on 1 July 1957. Ordered to active service on 28 October 1962. Relieved from active duty on 28 November 1962. Redesignated as: 731 Military Airlift Squadron on 1 January 1967; 731 Tactical Airlift Squadron on 1 October 1972. Inactivated on 1 October 1982. Activated in the Reserve on 1 October 1982. Redesignated as 731 Airlift Squadron on 1 February 1992. Combat in European Theater of Operations (ETO), 13 May 1943-19 April 1945. Trained for bombardment missions, 1947-1951. Between 1952 and 1982, trained successively for tactical reconnaissance, bombardment, and airlift operations. Since 1982, took part in tactical airlift operations and training exercises at home and abroad. Operated C-130 aircraft; provided global airlift, 1992-. Supported Global War On Terrorism in Southwest Asia, 2005-. Trained with Modular Airborne Firefighting System (MAFFS).
