ABERYSTWYTH UNIVERSITY (former University College Aberystwyth)

Country: United Kingdom
Campus/location : Aberystwyth

Coat of arms (crest) of Aberystwyth University

Official blazon

Arms: Per chevron Or and vert,in chief two dragons combatant gules, armed and langued azure, and in base an open book proper.
Crest: On a wreath of the colours, A castle battlement in flames, arising therefrom an eagle, all proper.
Motto: Nid byd byd wybodaeth

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on May 7, 1928.

The dragons in the arms are derived from the dragon of ancient legends in Welsh poetry, like the one that is found on the Welsh flag. The book is an obvious symbol for learning.

The crest of a phoenix refers to the Old College building, which was burnt out in a fire, but rebuilt.
