Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on on April 12, 1792 and again on November 15, 2001.
The 1792 arms should symbolize readiness to defend the freedom of the town and of the country. The municipal rights and arms survived the abolishment of the town reform in 1792 and were used until 1795.
In the early 20th century a variant with crossed swords was used, due to inexact description by historian Motiejus Valancius, which in turn was based on the data collected by historian Simonas Daukantas. In 1969 the arms were granted with the same mistake.
The modern design is based on the picture of 1792, but the base is removed. The original Polish motto “We will better lose life than freedom” is now translated into Lithuanian.
