Origin/meaning

The arms with the three towers were granted at the same time as the city rights in 1847. The three towers first appear on a seal since the 17th century, with the middle tower slightly higher. Since the early 19th century the three towers are of equal height. The small crosses are seen as a symbol of the Abbey of Hersfeld, to which the town belonged for a long time.

From 1972-1990 the city used arms divided, with in the upper part the three towers on a hill, and below in the third quarter a crossed hammer and sickle and in the fourth quarter a wavy bar, for the Werra river.
