Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on January 28, 1843.

Borgerhout was created as a separate municipality from Deurne in 1836. The new council applied in 1843 for the use of arms. The council applied for the use of the same arms as Deurne, as the municipality historically belonged to Deurne. Also, the tree in the arms was a canting symbol for Hout (wood).

The College of Arms decided that the use of the same arms was not allowed, but when the background colour was changed from blue to red, the arms would be sufficiently different. The council agreed and the arms were granted.
