Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The bird is a canting element (Vogel means bird in German, the bishop's family originated from Germany). The bishop chose a dove as a bird, symbolising the Holy Spirit. It also refers to the Holy Ghost College where he studied. The dove holds a stalk of wheat for the wheat fields of Kansas.
The green field is a reference to Ireland, the country of origin of the bishop's mother. It also refers to the Diocese of Greensburg, where he was born and raised.
The crosses are taken from the arms of William Penn and thus refer to Pennsylvania, his home State. The crossed quills refer to his (former) administrative tasks and roles in the diocese.
The crescent resembles the letter C and refers to St. Cyril, the baptismal name of the bishop. It also refers to St. Mary under the title Immaculate Conception and was also used by the Sisters of Charity in the US, who ran the grade school which the bishop attended.
